Today we are celebrating World Book Day. The theme for this year is ‘Share a story'. We wanted to share with you our favourite healthcare books for children to read. Ranging from ages two to teenage years, there is something suitable for everyone.

Going to the Doctor

For very young children, aged 2-4, the book ‘Going to the Doctor’ is perfect for teaching children about going to the doctor and what’s involved. At a young age, children can fear things such as going to the doctor or the dentist. This book removes all those worries and visually teaches children why we need to go to the doctors. In the book, three children need to visit the doctor for different reasons.

Most of the scenarios covered in the book are very accurate which is great for educating your children about the truth. The beautiful illustrations provide clear and detailed visuals to educate children about going to the doctors and what they can expect.

The Shine A Light: Human Body

For primary school children, the book 'The Shine A Light: Human Body' is perfect for teaching children about the secrets of the human body. It’s best to have a torch to hand when reading this book, you can shine a light behind the pages to see some amazing things that happen in the human body, such as muscles flexing and food travelling through the digestive system.

This book is perfect for visually educating children aged 4-8. Your child will learn everything and anything about the human body such as sleeping, eating, dreaming and growing.

Knowledge Encyclopedia Human Body!

'Knowledge Encyclopedia Human Body!' is the ultimate kids guide to understanding the human body. With computer-generated 3-D imagery which displays the body in true detail, this encyclopedia teaches children about the body, from head to toe.

With the advanced detailed imagery, this book is perfect for 9-12-year-olds. On each page, you can find detailed imagery accompanied by fun facts. Your child can discover things such as why sweating can save your life, how the brain creates memories and why blood is the colour red. This book is much more than your average encyclopedia.

Kay’s Anatomy: A Complete (and Completely Disgusting) Guide to the Human Body

Adam Kay’s book takes a gross yet funny route to educating children about the human body. This book is perfect for children aged 8-13. Despite many books about human biology being aimed at very young readers, this book offers older children and teenagers information about the human body at a more advanced level. If your child is learning GCSE biology this book is perfect teaching them about the human body in a fun way.

Adam Kay is an award-winning writer, comedian and former doctor, you may know his first book ‘This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor’, a Sunday Times bestseller.

Sapiens a Graphic History by Yuval Noah Harari

Our last recommendation is a book suitable for all ages, especially teenagers. This best seller is bursting with colourful illustrations and humour. Harari tells the story of humankind’s creation and evolution, exploring how biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human”.

With 256 pages of full-colour illustrations, this book covers some mind-blowing concepts of history and the rise of mankind as a species.

All these books provide children with educational insights into the world of health, care and anatomy. Whether it’s going to the doctors, learning about evolution or how the body works, all the suggestions above are perfect to help your child learn.

If you have any recommendations of healthcare books for children to read, please let us know in the comments below, and we will add them to our reading list.
