Even well beyond the pressures of the winter, hospitals in England are having to deploy escalation measures to cope with levels of demand. According to the British Medical Association 9 in 10 NHS trusts were still using escalation beds with little sign of this practice ending. This research shows that hospitals' 'core bed stock' is no longer able to deal with the level of year-round demand on the NHS.
