Throughout February, we will be celebrating LGBT+ History Month. In our latest article, we discuss what LGBT+ History Month is, how you can get involved and how we support the LGBT+ community at Pulse Nursing at Home.

What is LGBT+ History Month?

LGBT+ History Month is an annual campaign that takes place every February to celebrate the LBGT+ community which includes the history of LGBT+ rights and civil rights movements. It takes place in February to coincide with the abolition of Section 28 in 2003, a policy that prohibited the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality in local authorities in the UK.

LGBT+ History Month was initiated in February 2005 by an educational charity called Schools Out UK. The month-long event aims to raise awareness and combat negative prejudice against LGBT+ people and their history.

The theme for this year is ‘political artists’. It was chosen to contribute to the various movements taking place across the world, such as Black Lives Matter, Me Too and climate change.

How can you get involved?

To support LGBT+ History Month, you can purchase and wear the LGBT+ History Month badges and lanyards, which you can find on the organisation’s website.

The LGBT+ History Month charity has a downloadable resources pack that contains a variety of information, activities and fact sheets for different age ranges, individuals and businesses.

For 2023, the Schools Out UK charity is giving young people aged 5 - 18+ the chance to be at the centre of next year’s LGBT+ History Month by having their art used as the badge for the campaign and sold across the UK to support the charity in raising vital funds. You can find out more about the competition here.

How do we support the LGBT+ community?

As part of our parent company, Acacium Group, we have a network of people dedicated to supporting the growth of an inclusive and diverse business by raising awareness of issues faced by the LGBT+ community, celebrating their differences and breaking down the barriers. The network aims to create a safe and welcoming space for all LGBTQ+ employees within Acacium Group and allows them to share experiences and amplify each other’s voices.

We’re always looking to grow our team of expert nurses and support workers. If you would like to join our team of healthcare professionals, then register with us using the form below, or contact our team on 0207 959 1003.
