Today is International Nurse Day. An annual campaign that is celebrated worldwide to acknowledge and pay tribute to nurses across the world and the contributions they make every day. In today’s article, we discuss the theme for International Nurses Day, its history and how we are supporting the campaign this year.

The theme

The theme for this year’s International Nurses Day is ‘Nurses: A voice to lead. Invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global healthcare.’ The theme focuses on the need to protect, support and invest in nursing to strengthen the health system across the world.

When did International Nurses Day begin?

In 1953, an official within the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare called Dorothy Sunderland contacted the president to proclaim a day for nurses. At the time, the day was not approved. It wasn’t until 1974 that the day became approved when the International Council of Nurses proclaimed the 12th of May as International Nurses Day. The day was officially named International Nurses Day or IND in 1974.

How can you support International Nurses Day?

Every year, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) creates a vast range of resources and promotional tools to educate the public and nurses about International Nurses Day and the nursing profession. You can also download the International Nurses Day logo on their website.

The Royal College of Nursing is showcasing the work of nurses across the UK by sharing their stories that demonstrate #BestofNursing. You can share your #BestofNursing story on social media using the following hashtags #BestOfNursing and #NursesDay and tagging the Royal College of Nursing in your posts @theRCN (Twitter and Instagram) and @RoyalCollegeofNursing (Facebook).

You can also download graphics for your social media accounts from the Royal College of Nursing’s website to raise awareness of International Nurses Day.
